Fraudulent advertisements on web portals like Quikr

Location/place: Dehardun

Name of company/service: Abuma Mobile Phone Company, UK

A very well organised network of dubious operators are using web portals like Quikr by misleading people with lucrative offers such as…

“Don’t miss this great opportunity of buy 1 and get 1 free. Brand new factory unlocked Apple iPhone 4S, 4, 3S, 3G/64,32,16GB sealed in original box with original accessories, manual & International 1 year guarantee card”

Yesterday, I too fell prey to one such advt by one ‘Abuma Mobile Phone Co, UK’, whose Indian agent Mr Wale Thompson after convincing me with company’s ISO Certification from UK, made me deposit Rs 11,700/- (50% of total value of Apple iPhone 4S 16GB) in their HDFC Bank A/c promising delivery in 24 hours. The same evening, one Mr Johnson Clark of Fast Lane Inernational Courier Service, UK mailed me the National Identity Card of one Mr Steward David, their delivery agent. Astonishingly, this gentleman called up this morning saying the Customs people were demanding Rs 8,000/- from him, therefore, I must transfer this amount to him immediately. I could feel the trap I had fallen into. Yet I called on Mr Wale Thomson asking him to stick to his words i.e. 50% cash against delivery but he faltered “Either pay the money immediately or else no delivery could be made” I requested to cancel the deal but he outrightedly refused saying money once paid cannot be claimed back…

Soon thereafter, I browsed Quikr looking for the original post, I was astonished to see dozens of similar looking ads of mobile cos claiming to be from UK!!!

Though it may be impossible to filter the authenticity of all postings, yet, those reported to have indulged into fraudulent practices must for sure be blacklisted in order to alert all those who might fall into such traps…

I would truly appreciate if Consumer Forum could take this a step further…hopefully!!!

Thanks
