Convenience Fee

Location/place: Vashi, Navi Mumbai

Name of company/service: Indigo, Spicejet, Makemytrip

I tried booking airline tickets today. During the booking I suddenly saw a “Convenience Fee” of Rs. 100 per passenger per leg of the journey had been charged. When I quickly looked up Indigo and Spicejet, I saw the same there as well. What additional convenience am I being provided that I should suddenly start paying convenience fees?

  1. It happened to me as well while booking a flight on Indigo. I firmly believe that any amount that is to be deducted from the customer should be explained. The final “you pay” amount does not reflect this. However, the moment you click the payment button it asks for confirmation for an additional Rs.125 “convenience fee”, that has no option to be removed, no explanations, and is conveniently extracted. I had no option but to click and pay. Does anyone ever get a response on these “write a comment” websites?

  2. I booked a ticket on Air Indigo’s website now. I was charged a convenience fee of Rs 100 per passenger for no apparent reason. There was no hint of explanation either on their website. This is from an Airline that I until now believed was transparent and ethical!

  3. the moment you are boarding on an aircraft, you are availing of a premium service and these sorts of hidden charges are standard business practice. You can no way escape from these. More important is whether your journey is safe and you can reach your destination with minimum time and inconvenience.

  4. Indigo was never been a transparent airlines. In fact none of them are. They all are doing a cartel and collusion to loot Indian flyers. If you closely see, the price of Indigo and Speicejet are same all the days for most of the sectors. What does it mean? They were supposed to have seat categories with price which they sell. Does it mean both Indigo and Spice same number of seats on all days and hence they are not having the lower cost seats anymore. Ridiculous. About convenience charge I agree to the fact that from home you are getting a ticket without going to the Indigo office. However interestingly if you do a booking through call center of Indigo they are charging INR 150 for transaction fee which they are not charging online. Which means by some or other means they are looting money from us. I dont even understand what does a Fuel surcharge means. Why they can directly charge in the ticket price. In anyway they are pocketing the fees and taxes except the few hundreds which is been paid either to airport authority or to govt. I wish any NGO take a call and file a RTO for these kind of practices.

  5. Dear Indigo,
    Why is Covenience Fee?
What extra Covenience am I getting?
Why it is not displayed on any of the previous web pages?
Why there is no mention of Covenience Fee in Terms&Conditions?
English dictionary doesn’t have any word like: “Covenience”

Customer Care reps doesn’t have any answer for above questions.

The same happened with me today, bought a return ticket, wherein they charged me Rs.200, Rs.100 each way. I was purchasing the ticket after comparing the fare with Air India, apparently there was a price difference of Rs.284. I felt like cheated.

  7. Please revert for the above replies, also let us know that where are the answers for this questions

  8. why are the airlines in the first place charging us with convenience fees…thats just ridiculous…even after the supreme court decision that no airline can levy conv fee they still do….somebody needs to file a RTI for this…??

Most interestingly, other than Air India, all other airlines charge convenient fee (Air asia I think also not charging)…Most ironical part is as below

    1) when you book online, they charge convenience fee of 100-125 per sector , even if you book a rerun trip for your family of 4, you may have to pay total of 8 x convenience fee,a fee to be paid for every passenger !!

    a) If you are booking at an airport counter, there is no convenience fee

    2) When you cancel ticket online, there is no convenience fee, though the previously collected convenience fee will be forfeited, of course

    b) If you cancel the ticket at airline counter, they will charge you a convenience fee !!

The double measure is to ensure that looting is in place…Logic is quite complex..Airline want us to use their counter or internet is not evident…Convenince fee is inevitable..what a convenient way of looting !!!!

Not only for flight transactions, convenience fees is being slapped for all online shopping transactions.
This is disgusting and should be done away with.
